When you notice floaters in your vision you are seeing a shadow of debri suspended inside a gel called the vitreous in the posterior portion of the eye. Most times this debri is simply remnants of a fetal artery no longer present after birth or what is called vitreous strands. Both of these are normal and do not indicate a disease. Some people have more noticeable debri than others, though. Additionally, later in life, it is not unusual to see patients develop a posterior vitreal detachment (that’s where the vitreous gel in the back of the eye detaches from the retina — seldom is this a problem) that can cause an increase in floaters.

Sometimes floaters (debri) can come from other sources, though, that can indicate a problem. Retinal holes, tears, or detachments can create debri in the vitreous. Paients with these types of floaters tend to notice a CHANGE in the amount or density of their floaters.

So any patient noticing floaters should have an initial examination to assure that the debri is of no importance and any CHANGE in floaters should be noted and another examination performed.

Now to your question. Since the floater is debri suspended inside the posterior chamber of the eye, there is no drop or medication that can remove this debri from the eye. I have heard on the radio (it was being promoted by Paul Harvey) about a vitamin supplement of some type that claimed to clear eye floaters. Don’t waste your money.

SEVERE sight decreasing floaters can be resolved by a surgical procedure called a vitrectomy (removal of the vitreous) but this procedure is not adviseable unless vision is extremely poor. Hope this helped.
